Dubporn Records Releases DP006 and DP007...

On December 12th Dubporn Record's released Adames's Be Bop Peru EP worldwide.

His first official release, Adames is a man of many genres. The opening track ‘Guanchingua’ is an upbeat romp in bass tinged house territory while the beautifully haunting ‘Crush’ is laced with a grimey bass line. The passionately aggressive ‘Fits of Verb’ and the chilled out ‘Hermittance’ are guaranteed replays.

The Dark Matter LP was released on December 26th from the Undersky Collective's own Imaginary Friend.

Hailing from Greece and aged just 20, Imaginary Friend is an immensely precocious talent. He burst onto the Dubstep scene in 2010 with the vibrant 'How To Use It' and 'Reject 'Em All' which are released on Breathe Records respectively, and more with "A Therapy For Blind Musicians" in "FUCK JAZZSTEPPA Vol.2" compilation, which is released on Jazzsteppa LTD, next to Borgore, IBenji, Bukez Finezt, Oceania and of course Jazzsteppa themselves.

My Top 5 Songs from Dubporn: The Future

After an interesting back and forth on Twitter over the new Dubporn Compilation I decided I should write a little review here and put the matter to rest. Basically the tweet suggested that I could not decide on a favorite track because they were all so good, it’s fair enough to say I was pleasantly surprised at the collection put together by camp Dubporn. I knew my long time pal Adrianna Gooddroid had put together a label catering to bassey-garagey-technoie stuff, but it was from Miami. Unless we’re talking about Wade and Lebron battling Kobe, CP3, and the rest of the Lakers in the 2012 NBA Finals, Miami doesn’t typically generate a tremendous amount of buzz internationally. Could this Miami start-up really be a relevant player, a tropical Hyperdub oasis La Sanwicherie’d somewhere in between Coral Gables and the American Airlines Arena?

Illegitimate Children and Handbook both add two songs a piece making up just over a quarter of the entire compilation between the both of them. I want to go on record and say that even if Illegitimate Children produced a pile of dirty laundry I would still listen to it at least once based solely on the name. It’s definitely not laundry though, they’re actually delightfully produced tracks. Especially “Cubicle”, which I believe is the opening track and does of good job of quickly raising the expectations throughout. Blacksmif’s contribution, “Legend of the White Horse Plains” jumps out as wordy frontrunner for my personal favorite despite him modestly admitting that he himself preferred Handbook. Noble move on his behalf but Handbook’s two offerings “Luurrve” and “Girl, Stay” are slightly sappy for my taste. Sentimental baked goods not suited for misanthropes who like making love while watching Ichi the Killer or the even more barbaric film, Babel. They’re probably Drake’s favorites though.

“Mortem Obire” is the second song on here and it definitely appeals to my nostalgia for bottom notes. The moody layers and mature tones means it was almost certainly produced by a grizzled veteran involved in the intricacies of sound engineering for numerous decades…wait, WHAT! 18 years old! Fuck man, this happens to me now at least once a year when I’m introduced to a producer that I think is much older based on the maturity of their music. Whether it’s Kode9 first introducing me to Joker or in this case Biak. Could it be us ~~twenty~~ thirty somethings naturally feel like the next generation couldn’t possibly understand the subtle philosophies and vacuous nuances that made this sound great in the first place? It’s quasi Gran Torino mentality that should get the kibosh before we’re left standing on the porch like Walt Kowalski waving a M1 Garand around at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

5 Years of Hyperdub cost me somewhere in between three months interning at a Miami ad agency and half a day raking autumn leaves off Granma’s front lawn. I’m not saying Dubporn Records: The Future is anywhere close to 5 but it’s free and it’s worth talking about. The labels potential and the strength of its young roster make downloading a no-brainer. If I had to make a critique it would be that a few of the songs feel over-ambitious technically, bordering on pretentious. The best beats in the world are simple loops with just one or two creative breaks. As soon as I start hearing classical piano samples and build-ups that progress into a song’s third melody I tune it out faster than I tune my family out when I’m trying to watch the second game of a NBA tripleheader on Christmas Day.

Overall I stand by my original tweet, the whole collection is highly enjoyable and paints a ton of atmosphere for the listeners. It’s layered, moody and challenging and a brilliant way to showcase the first year of a promising new label from the land of cortaditos, flamingos and Ferraris.

Ukranian based DJ Reixtra's Prymara EP was released on Dubporn Records on November 28th. After many years performing everything from Drum and Bass to IDM to experimental and anything in between, Reixtra settled on a found that gravitates towards Dubstep and Future Garage, with heavy influences from Reggae and Calypso.

The EP, titled Prymara, features seven tracks that showcase the artist’s versatility while embracing the label’s deep bass roots. With tracks like the haunting yet romantic “Pregnancy” and the equally airy yet dark and bass fueled “Neverliving”, the EP explores the “pacifying, often sad atmospheric sounds” that he is known for. The ep’s title track, “Prymara, is a perfect dreamy example of the “set of extraordinary rhythms” that he is well versed at creating.

DP004 Released: Inanna's Cariad EP on Dubporn Records

Inanna's long awaited Cariad EP has finally been released on Dubporn Records. Featuring remixes from PTR1 and Shoju, Cariad has received amazing reviews. This is definitely a release you need to get your hands on.

'Cariad immediately takes us back to a time where life was easy, nothing to worry about, innocence. The music-box melody and chimes combine with simple percussion in an Aphex Twin type piece that gets the replay everytime. It’s left up to her own remix to take it up a notch into the more broken beat territories that some may find even more blissful, keeping all the original elements and adding a little tempo with some warm bass to boot. Unbelieveably good music, so nice.

The experimental mix hears children laughing and a 4/4 kick that gives more movement whilst not overpowering the overall sense of wonderment and beauty held by the main music-box melody that gets even more embellished here. Then lastly Shoju gives ‘Cariad’ an overhaul and turns it into a more dancefloor slice of heads down, deep house music that will go down a storm come 3am at Fabric.'

Dubporn Records Releases DP003: Porphyro's Qualia EP

After the successful release of Inanna's Touch Me EP, Dubporn Records comes from a very talented young man out named Oliver Wallace, also known as Porphyro. Only 22 years of age and based out of Canterbury London, Porphyro's sound can be described as a mature take on Modern World Bass Music.

The EP, titled Qualia, features two tracks which showcase what could almost be the range of his sound. The first track, 'Finance' draws heavily from the deep bas sound with emphasis on bass and a trance inspired vocal track. The second, 'Never', is an airy, spacey track that almost floats effortlessly by.

Set to be released on October 10th, Qualia can be purchased at one of many fine online retailers.

Bassmentality is also the name of the artists' Toronto party, where JUAN BASSHEAD has played multiple times. I had producer Chalk come through the studio, in full force Entourage-style, perform a wonky-as-fuck set for the show. The return of Down Sundays

If you're new to dubstep and bass music in Miami then you may not be aware of the party that we call Down. If you are familiar, read anyways 'cause this shit took a while to write!

In 2010 Gooddroid got together with a couple of Miami selectors that supported the deeper shades of dubstep, with the intent of providing a place to dance and hang out that you're not going to feel so bro'd out all night. After moving to a couple of venues, Bar Black became the home and many, many Sunday nights were spent drinking cheap beer, skanking out, playing Scrabble and video games!

With guests such as Scuba, Djunya, FaltyDL, Joe Nice, Scuba, Headhunter, Distance, Brenmar, Nick Argon and the best local talent, the night was solidified as the spot to hear deep dubstep, garage and future bass. Unfortunately Bar Black had to close it's doors to the public, just as I joined as a regular resident, and we've been pretty sad ever since.

After a period of time and effort, we've located our new home, in the side room at the newly renovated Eve, just around the corner from our previous home. While we may have changed homes, our passion for deep bass music hasn't, and we are very proud and excited to see our regulars, and new faces, every other Sunday starting September 11th.

Lunice – ‘LIVE FROM’ RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRES. MAJOR LAZER AT NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Sure, Miami is the hub and essentially the only place you can get original booty bass records on wax. And for a split-second, we all thought Uncle Luke was going to be elected mayor (he is partly responsible for this video). But Miami is also home to primary strands of dirty south, thug rap, of which you can finds thousands of mixtapes at the Carol City Flea Market. It's a sound that we're accustomed to and hear on a regular just listening to 99Jamz throughout the day.

Not until recently has this flavor of crunk'd-out 140 bpm rap evolved into less of a forum for MCs to spit on, and more of a producer-centered area of club banging. The fact that it has seeped into the UK bass mindframe w/ producers like Girl Unit, Salva and S-X, should be even more indication that tastemakers should be turning their heads over to the 305 for more influence.

That said, Toronto-based Lunice, who's been producing this same thug-conscious sound for the past couple of years, performed a set at London's Notthingham Carnival this past week, w/ Boiler Room (the Ustream UK electronic channel) on deck to document the whole thing.

Dude has tons of energy, and his set spiraled between based rap, gangster-heavy UK bass, fringe footwork tunes and King of Diamonds-ready trap rap. I'm telling you-- this is a sound I feel us Miami Dubsteppers should really be exploring. It's not a foreign culture either-- it's rap we grew up either loving or hating (though, you were probably lying about hating it).

Lunice puts these familiar rap signifiers and connects it with the UK culture we're accustomed to, mixing Gucci Mane with Girl Unit into a synonymous category to a point where you don't even know whose song you're listening to anymore.

I've seen DJs connect the dots, like Juan B and Gooddroid. Let's all connect these dots and highlight some of the great stuff Miami has to offer by not dismissing the mainstream rap community that's built within the South, but highlighting/celebrating it.

Small Introduction

Kind and badboy head honcho of Miami Dubstep, Jsin, asked if I wanted to be an admin of the MD blog and, of course, I said yes. He said it can get really lonely posting up stuff on here, and since I run my own dubstep/bass-centered blog, I thought I could help him out!

Just a light introduction of myself. I host a weekly radio show called Where Were U in '02 on WRGP Radiate FM FIU Radio (the Sunday 8-10 slot) where I spin dubstep, grime, UK Funky, house and all facets of the bass continuum. Been doing the show for almost a year and a half, and it's my baby. It's gone through so many stages of growth, with myself fostering it to what it is now. And it can only get bigger (that's what she said).

Guests I've had on the show include: Mary Anne Hobbs, Juan Basshead, Gooddroid, Dave Betamax, Animal Krackerz, Never Yawn, Grayghost, Jumanji and more.

On Side A is ‘Touch Me’ from LA-based producer Inanna. Her sound rests on lightness of touch and fluid rhythmic progression, where atmospheric enchantment and expansive moods are equal to her rigidly precise beatscapes and judiciously deployed subs. Inanna’s previous work has been described as art to be displayed in an audiophile gallery, and she is rapidly forging a reputation as one of North America’s premier (modern) garage selectors. The six-minute original version of ‘Touch Me’ takes a haunting twighlight path through garage zones, where light flickers through the trees and sounds dart among the undergrowth like half-glimpsed wildlife, curiously observing the listener from a safe distance. Ptr1’s remix re-invents the track as a more club-friendly excursion, ramping up the rhythmic dominance for a swung session of refined 2-step, with a snappy sharpness complimenting the echoing melancholy backgrounds. When I was asked to be the Music Supervisor for a documentary about Corporate Propaganda and its effects on Democracy I instantly said yes. The film focuses primarily on the work established by the late Alex Carey regarding his theories on Corporate Propaganda and its effects on Democracy. The film takes the audience on a journey from the late 1800's beginning with the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, one of the first known written texts proven to be a forgery in order to spread antisemitism, and then taken through World War I and introduced to the Creel Commission, where the establishing ideas of public relations were essentially first introduced. Following World War II, the film gradually evolves into our present day, re-visiting some of the most current historical events that have taken place including our last Presidential Election and explores society's current structure as a proposed democracy in a capital driven economy.

It's known that I'm a huge Odd Future fan, so when AMKZ showed me his new track "REBEL", my head nearly exploded. Hearing Tyler, The Creator's voice on that huge system was intense! This track is part of ANIMAL KRACKERZ' forthcoming EP titled "WELCOME TO THE MEAT MARKET", so get ready for more of this dark swamp bass!

The long awaited 'Ternary EP' has finally been released! This is Gray Ghost's first release and its been getting great reception so far. The single 'Phosphoresence' has been getting international airplay, most recently on SolFM in France. You can get the digital release on Itunes, Juno, Soundium and at other online retail stores. The vinyl release will be coming up soon!

We've also signed six new artists; PTR1 (Poland), NVS (Canada), Porphyro (UK), Reixtra (Ukraine) and Miami's own El Topo and Chalk. Look out for releases from them within the next few months and you can catch Chalk playing on the patio at the next Get Low on May 12th.

Introducing Dubporn Records

Dubporn records is a label dedicated specifically to Deep Dubstep, Experimental, and Future Bass music.

Conceived several years ago as an idea for an adult website Dubporn flourished into an idea for a record label that featured only the best in the genres, focusing on Bass music that wasn't overly aggressive and could be appreciated at home and on the dance floor. Dubporn is highly influenced by other labels such as Deep Medi, Punch Drunk, and Hotflush, promising to deliver releases of the same caliber.

The first signed artists on the label are Gray Ghost, Gooddroid/Chismosa and soon Inanna.

Brandon DiGiovanni or Gray Ghost has been involved with music from a young age, playing in different bands has been involved with music from a young age, playing in different bands. Dubstep made its first appearance in his life around 2006, and he fell in love with the syncopated rhythms and skank's of artists like Silkie and Quest. Only DJ'ing for a little over a year now Gray Ghost has played at many parties in Miami, namely Get Low and Down where he retains a residency. His love for controlling the dance floor pushed him to start producing his 3 song EP, yet to be named. "The largest driving force behind the music i've been creating is

this planet, the earth, and the natural phenomenon that are always taking place on it. I've been privileged to grow up in a city where electronic music is so prevalent and diverse. Right now Im taking all the opportunities I can and hoping for the best."

Adrianna Moschides also know as Gooddroid (and sometimes Chismosa) is the founder and head of Dubporn Records. DJ'ing for 8 years and playing Dubstep for 6 Gooddroid is one of the few pioneers of the Miami Dubstep scene and has grown infinitely with the music. "Seeing what Dubstep has evolved into and where its going made me want to start this label. I want people to see that not all Bass music is about aggressive. There's a lot of beauty in the deep stuff, and a lot of producers who make it. I want them to be heard." Gooddroid's love of Dubstep and Bass has evolved into a deep love for Chicago Juke music. "There's some crazy energy in it that I can't exactly describe, you just have to hear it. It'll get in you.” She's started producing Juke music under the moniker of Chismosa and plans to release a 3 song EP on Dubporn titled "Back

Down".

I spent a lot time pondering the mystery of who this Carla girl might of been. Ramadanman’s 2008 classic may have been a dedication to all Carla’s everywhere but I wanted to believe there was some special girl out there who well enough deserved one the most hypnotic outstanding songs of the year to be named after her.

Now that the years have gone by and the styles have changed, I flew out to San Francisco for the holidays and finally caught Ramadanman play in the city’s Mission Dolores district. Going by the new alias Pearson Sound and anyone lucky enough to be there for Icee Hot’s New Years bash was treated to what was primarily marvelous grime infused wizardry. Some in the large crowd may have even been a bit confused by it but I just ate it all up. I knew one day studying Ms. Dynamite and P Money lyrics would pay off.

Three months and 23 days later, thanks to Surefire and Gooddroid and also The Overthrow and Pattern Awareness and not to mention Smut + Bass, Miami gets the opportunity to experience the same. Well it’ll probably be totally different but just as dope. Maybe better on account of Zed Bias, DJG, and Salva who are all gangsters on the buttons in there own right. I might even finally figure out who this Carla chick is.

"Juan Basshead has been the most influential figure in the Miami Dubstep movement, throwing some of the first events at the now defunct South Beach spot, the Laundry Bar (later known as the Black Sheep Bar). Besides being the first promoter in Florida to book headlining artists such as Vex’d, Joe Nice, Skream, Mala and Hatcha, his contribution to the world of bass music extends to the Basshead Music imprint. With releases from 12th Planet ft Emu, Otto Von Schirach, Noah D, Bassnectar and Datsik, and the recent addition of South Florida’s AlphaXero and Animal Krackerz, the Basshead sound is just beginning to resonate.

MC Jumanji is from the same neighborhood that I grew up, a small little city named Hollywood, about 20 minutes north of Miami. Coming from the rave scene, Calvin Cyrus, the young 20 something’s birth name, was scooped up by Juan Basshead and became his official MC, as well as becoming a resident MC at Miami’s infamous, award winning bass music event, Get Low. As he begins to tour internationally, Jumanji’s skills are being sharpened and solidifying his voice as one of the most prominent in the Miami Bass Renaissance (yea, I said Renaissance).

Edit: Also holding it down on the mic that night was Nome, aka Leins Rios. Leins has been a part of the Miami Dubstep scene from the get; he became a regular party goer at the Laundry Bar/Bar Black and was one of the earliest supporters of the scene. At some point the microphone made it’s way to the seasoned Miami hiphop talent at dubstep events, so he was naturally selected to also host Get Low.

This set was recorded live at Get Low at the Vagabond in Downtown Miami, during this year’s Winter Music Conference. You can catch Juan Basshead and Jumanji at a number of events this during the Miami Music Week, or Ultra Week as us lazy people call it."

Hotflush Showcase Miami

With so many dubstep and bass music events going on this week, it’s almost impossible for partygoers to manage it all. With the aptly dubbed “Miami Music Week,” already catering to numerous massive raves it could be easy for attendees to get lost in all the hype. Which is precisely why I wanted to spotlight one particular event, The Hotflush Showcase at Electric Pickle.

It goes down Saturday night after all the pool parties wrap up, the lines begin to form outside of the mega-clubs, and Ultra releases a floodgate of anxious youth on to the streets of Downtown Miami. The best in bass music will be highlighted from 10pm to 5am, housed within the familiarity of midtown’s Electric Pickle.

Hotflush Recordings is one of dubstep’s original record labels, founded by the DJ/producer Scuba (Paul Rose) in 2003. Never a slave to genres, from the earliest days of dubstep Hotflush has embodied an array of sounds including breakbeat, grime, garage, and most recently techno. Last year saw the record label release not one but two groundbreaking albums with Mount Kimbie’s “Crooks & Lovers” and Scuba’s own “Triangulation.” Up and coming artists like Sepalcure and George Fitzgerald guarantee the future will be just as promising for the label.

This is a showcase of powerful, often dark, emotionally satisfying, sex inducing dance music. All the way down the lineup, its not to be missed and truly a blessing for Miami bass music lovers.

Many tracks that defined the scene got their first plays in the sweaty basement, cheered by an open-minded, enthusiastic crowd.

A Brief History of WMC Dubstep

With all the Winter Music Conference mania running around South Florida right now, I thought I would re-blog the article I wrote for www.wmcdubstep.com last year about dubstep's history at the annual conference.

The history of dubstep in Miami goes back a little further than most people think. Beatcamp’s own TS Heritage played a dubstep set back at the Laundry Bar in 2006. Also at Laundry Bar around the same time Martyn mixed his atmospheric brand of dubstep with drum and bass for a small crowd. Even Broward county got in on the action back in early 2007 when two of Florida’s first dubstep DJs, Orlando’s Redcoat and Norbel brought heavy dubstep bass to Roxanne’s in Fort Lauderdale. A few months later Miami’s own Gooddroid was playing dubstep regularly on Thursday nights at the now closed Soho Lounge. But the spark that fully set the fire ablaze happened on September 21st 2007, that night Londoners Skream and Mala’s amazing display of sub-sonic mastery destroyed any negative preconceptions many had at the time and really built the foundation for dubstep in the magic city.

Winter Music Conference 2008 was the first year dubstep was fully represented at the conference. Although since 2002 the yearly Transatlantic showcase featured U.K. and American garage and 2step, it wasn’t until ‘08 that we got dubstep packaged in its current incantation and we got it in heavy doses. Benga’s first WMC performance came thanks to Dj Zinc’s Bassrush party. The lineup was mostly drum and bass but the dubstep faithful who waited till the wee hours for Benga’s set got a legendary performance that even had Goldie reaching across Benga and rewinding a track. Another highlight of WMC 2008 and possibly the biggest dubstep highlight of all was Plastician’s insane set during Friday night’s legendary Viram showcase. Tucked away in the side-room of a massive drum and bass event, a packed group of energetic dubstep ravers lost all control. Plastician who was already no stranger to Miami rocked the house like he owned the town. For nearly 4 hours Plastician dropped so much bass we all had to practically leave the club in wheelchairs. Saturday afternoon’s Destruction event was a great way to experience sub-bass frequencies chilling poolside or underwater. The world renowned Bomb Squad joined Mala, Skream, and long time U.S. representatives Moldy and Sam XL on the decks. A fun day in the sun and a great warm up for what was to be the main dubstep event of WMC 2008, London Bass. The Laundry Bar on South Beach was already home to dubstep in Miami so it made sense for the location to house the premiere WMC dubstep event. Mala and Skream replicated their September performance but this time for an international crowd of partygoers. The duo’s combination of face melting bass drops and heavy rollers was the perfect way to end an exciting and exhausting week of events.

As usual WMC 2009 was emphatically anticipated but nothing could of prepared me for the massive wave of support dubstep received and seemingly out of nowhere. Dj Craze and Shy Fx’s Bang Bang party was the real eye-opener that illustrated just how far bass music had come in a short time. It was a ridiculous party on a Wednesday night that really made you think, if this was WMC Wednesday then what was the weekend going to be like? With standout sets from Plastician, Benga, MRK1, and 12th Planet outside in the court yard of downtown’s The White Room and the crowd going bananas all night it really felt like a turning point for Miami dubstep. Skream and Mala’s second round of London Bass hit music conference attendees the very next night. It went down once again at the staple of the Miami scene and unfortunately no longer open Laundry Bar, the venue that felt like it was a home away from home for many original Miami dubsteppers.

Possibly the biggest night for dubstep during the 2009 conference went down at Soho Studios which was the site of the always quality Viram event that’s been an annual mainstay featuring the best from Andy C’s Ram Records and Ed Rush and Optical’s Virus Recordings. This particular year the union extended further to include easily the largest international breakbeat organization, Future Sounds of Breaks. Just like the previous year at Viram, Basshead Music was in charge of the dubstep area so naturally the results were nothing less then massive. Skream and Benga went back to back and their party style jump up bass had the outdoor crowd rocking. I will have to admit though Mala’s set at Viram/FSOB was the highlight of my WMC. Deep meditation style done at its finest and truthfully all the clichés that get thrown around about music taking you on a journey certainly applied in this case. Not to be outdone, Rusko’s first Miami appearance came during WMC 2009. His set for the Mad Decent/Turntablelab/Trouble & Bass party at the O.H.W.O.W. gallery was crazy fun and energetic. Backed up by MC Rod Azlan, the sweat filled garage rave vibes were out in full force with other acts on the line-up like Diplo, Dj Sega, and Drop The Lime.

Now WMC 2010 promises to raise the bar even higher. This is going to be my 10th consecutive conference and I can’t even remember another time where the buzz building up to March was so widespread. Events heavy on dubstep are scheduled for every night of the week and in some cases, multiple dubstep events happening on the same night. With so many options, it’s exciting to think about all the potentially great performances were in store for. If the last two years were any preview, dubstep could be up to the challenge of completely owning this year’s WMC and many more to come.

One thing I was right about was dubstep's dominance over the last year's conference, at least for underground music. It was impossible to keep track of all the shows unless you were a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and could multiply yourself into five different ravers just to be everywhere at once. So far 2011 is shaping up to be another one for the record books. Despite all the controversy with UMF, some amazing shows have been scheduled for both weeks. Make sure to drink plenty of water and get a few hours of sleep in there when you can.

Dave Betamax - Dissolved: Album Reviewed

South Florida has been enjoying the musical stylings of Dave Betamax ever since his Smut + Bass crew broke on to the scene just over a year ago. It seems like every rave or club event since then has had at least one of their representatives featured. A group that includes numerous talented DJs and producers like Sahar Berlin, Magoula, DJ Kronik, and Banaboogie. Dave is the president and leader of this colorful band of label mate flag bearers and yet he was able to put together an album that feels very isolated at times. Despite his connections to a larger collective, Dissolved is obviously a personal voyage the listener has to gather courage to really examine.

The album’s intro “Alone on Mars” is an ambient collage of bars that feel very true to its name. What I would listen to if I were Doctor Manhattan peacefully sitting on Mars pondering what it means to be Omnipotent. Two hundred and twenty-seven million kilometers from the sun, its light is already ten minutes old. So I move right along, “Plastic” is the kind of balanced mixture of deepness and pace without clocks or hourglasses that can trap the pink sands of Mars. It starts out relaxing but then picks up the energy, which is similar to the entire album.

If I had to choose a favorite track, it would be “Feelings.” Which reminds me of hearing a painter describe his body of work at the reception for his gallery exhibition. The album is his gallery and the overall theme is about missing a piece of your humanity. In Dave Beta’s case (he added the Max later because of a Facebook technicality) he leaves clues embedded in his songs titles. Whether it’s a signal that was lost, a lost heaven, or a piece of plastic that is missing life. Even 13/14.0 signifies something that’s incomplete.

On “Heaven Lost” and “The Tryst” the mood set by many of the album’s previous tracks are shaken up. It’s a leap to up-front broken beat rhythmic pleasure. We’re still on Mars but nuclear war with the Soviets is averted and its time to let loose. The title track is just over eight minutes long but really it’s just an outro featuring some more ambient goodness followed by a cover of Massive Attack’s classic “Dissolved Girl” off of their 1998 Mezzanine album.

Dissolved is the kind of music that would exist regardless of life. In Doctor Manhattan's words “an overrated phenomenon, Mars gets along perfectly without so much as a microorganism.” This is true enough but the music also lives equally within the sentient. Even if were all just on the dance floor doing the robot.

From Paris to Miami: Von D

I remember a few years back my good friend Giovanna Brass was telling me about this French producer Von D. She was excited to be featured as the model for album art on Von's Coquine record. After hearing the tune I knew why she was so stoked, it was a masterpiece of a record. Such a ridiculously sexy beat it had to come straight from Paris.

I was fortunate enough to catch him play at last years Smog vs. Basshead party. While the massive crowds were trashing out to big wigs like Skream and Plastician in the main room, Von D was matching their every rhythm out on the patio. Such an inspirational vibe I couldn’t help but to think how cool it would be to catch a Von D set at a more personal venue where the focus was better concentrated. Nothing against the big raves obviously but these sounds needed to be championed on their own. Well here is that very opportunity.

The guys at One Movement are bringing Von to play at that freshest new spot downtown, Loft 168 next Saturday February 26th. If you’re like me and cherish only the highest quality dubstep bass then this is a cant miss show. If you haven’t heard of Von D yet, don’t hand in your dubstep cool card without a fight. Mark your calendars and prepare to be consumed with vibes, sweat your tail off, and probably get laid.

They quickly healed when we found out that our replacement for the night would be none other than JAKES! Alas, the happiness could not last as JAKES canceled the next day. Consisting of CLAW (NY) and RICHIE AUGUST (Chicago), HULK has been on fire, catching the ear of Juan BassHead who had to sign them! Thursday February 17th will be the Miami Release Party, so it's time to celebrate! The MIA has invaded the UK once again! Tonight, BassHead Music boss and Get Low Resident DJ Juan BassHead is performing at legendary London club FABRIC with HATCHA (get a mix he did for this show here!!!), N-TYPE and other greats. No stranger to the UK, having played past DMZ events, Juan was invited by the Godfather of Dubstep himself to play their Sin City showcase at FABRICLIVE. Nick Argon owns and operates Argon Records, one of dubstep's leading and longest-running labels. Argon Records was an early innovator in the scene, introducing artists such as Matty G and Babylon System.

In 2010, Argon Records celebrates a decade in the dance. This year, we will see releases from long-established Argon Records artists, as well as new artists, including Von D, J:Kenzo, and Blasta.

In addition to running Argon Records, Nick Argon is a world-renowned DJ. He has performed at top dubstep nights around the globe including Smog LA, Dub War NYC, and DMZ London.

Also on the bill will be Miami's favorite DJ, Juan BassHead, back fresh from his Fabric debut in London along with MC Jumanji of BassHead Music!! Dave Betamax (Smut+Bass) will go head-to-head with DJ Wreck (BassHead), also Magoula (Smut+Bass), Munkz (Glitch.FM/Down), and of course Gooddroid (Down/Get Low) will be rounding out the night with some heavy heavy bass!!!
